Wellow Weekly 17th May 2024

HEADTEACHER’S MESSAGE

Welcome to our weekly bulletin.

A huge thank you to the children and staff for their efforts this week- new and ongoing examinations are a necessary task in schools so we can ensure our children are performing to their potential. They are also a barometer for us as a school against national standards.
Naturally we always look to support our children and alleviate any anxiety with such endeavours. Thank you too for your support in this.

Have a lovely weekend.

PRE-SCHOOL

Butterfly Life Cycles

The children in Pre School have enjoyed having caterpillars in their classroom this term and learning about their life cycle. This week the butterflies emerged from their chrysalis’, and it was time to release them.

Speedy & Zoom!

Pre-School would like to introduce their newest class members Speedy and Zoom, our class pets’ snails. We are enjoying learning all about them and have learnt that they are low-maintenance pets that do not need to be walked. They are mostly active at night and prefer shady areas. Our snails love to eat fruit and their favourite is red apple.

PRE-PREP

Year 2 Guest Speaker

It has been a busy week in year 2. We have had a special visiting speaker – Gemma Palmer (mum of Oliver and Georgina) . She came on Wednesday to speak with the children about her nursing career and her amazing nomination for the prestigious Florence Nightingale award in Westminster Abbey.

The children took part in a hot seating question and answer session where they learnt a great deal about the importance of hard work and have a vision for our future selves which links closely with our PSHE work this term.

Chick Incubator Watch!

Thanks to Mrs Baker (mum to Eddie and Billy), the children in Year Two are all on chick incubator watch!! This has been so egg-citing and very educational. We eagerly await the arrival of our 5 little feathered friends. Please keep a close eye on ClassDojo next week for further updates.

PREP

“Luna and the Skyrocket” – Prep Summer Production

Rehearsals are in full swing for the prep summer production “Luna and the Skyrocket”! The songs are already sounding fantastic and pupils are working hard on their lines. We are hoping to be off scripts after half term to get the most out of rehearsal and your support in helping the children learn lines is greatly appreciated

Taking part in a project which requires long term commitment, focus, team work and self confidence is so valuable for our pupils. These are the skills which lead to successful lives and underpin why we value the Arts at Wellow.

We are very much looking forward to seeing you on Thursday June 27th at the performance!

Year 6 – Australian Primary Industries

Year 6 have been lucky enough to have been learning about Australian Primary industries, through contact with a Miner/Driller called Mitch, who runs a rig drilling for samples of gold, nickel, copper or lithium in the Gibson Desert of Western Australia!

They have watched Topdrill workers in action, before submitting 30 questions to Mitch about how it all works, and how he ended up there (he is Mr. O’Kane’s stepson, originally from Notts!).

Mitch has kindly filmed videos at the end of 12-hour days to answer all of their queries, and the students had the opportunity to listen to the results of their questions in class!

ISA Arts Competition

Special mention goes to Year 6 for their efforts in the Art Butterfly Competition!

Year 3 took PSHEE outside this week!

SENIOR

Musical Theatre Club

It was wonderful to have two of the Senior Drama Club directing Prep pupils in their Musical Theatre Club. The group have been rehearsing Hard Knock Life fromAnnie”, and today brought the scene to life! Thanks to Lola (Y9) and Penny (Y8) for sharing their Drama skills with the group.

School Examination Week & GCSE Summer Series

Well done to all of our Year 7-9 students, who this week have undergone Summative Assessments in their subjects.

Results will be released to students next week.

A continued congratulations must go to our Y11 students who have completed their second week of external examinations.

An Unusual Visitor at Wellow!

A rather unusual visitor was spotted having a tour of the grounds of Wellow earlier this week!
