A very warm welcome back!
We have already completed our first full week term and as a whole school I am delighted that as a staff, parent body and children we are rising to the expectations of a new academic year. The standards expected of us all at Wellow are higher than ever and I thank you for your support in our welcome meetings and correspondence shared.

Pre-prep Highlights
Our new starters
We were thrilled to welcome our new starters into preschool this term. We’re excited to be part of their learning journey and watch them flourish. This week, the children have settled well into school life, participating in their first swimming and PE lessons. This week in Year 1 and 2- Guitars
Mr Joe Newman visited Year 1 and 2 on Thursday to tell us all about playing the guitar.
He brought along a range of instruments, from tiny ukulele’s to big, heavy electric guitars.
All the children enjoyed seeing them and hearing them being play. They all had a go to experience what it was like to play these instruments.
Parents have been sent information on how to contact Mr Newman if they would like their child to begin ukulele or guitar lessons (Year 2). Mrs Terry
A great start to the new term for Year Two. The children have certainly endorsed their ethos set out in the class charter. ‘ If you work hard, you get to play hard’. Mrs Jackson
Prep School Highlights
Year 4 have had a super week. We have been exploring key events in Ancient Greek Times and started our English text called ‘The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane’ about a special china rabbit that goes missing. The children have written a character description and explored new vocabulary.
In Maths we have been representing and partitioning numbers up to 1000. Furthermore, in science, we have planned an investigation ready to carry out next week on tooth decay.
I am really impressed with the children and their attitudes towards all their learning.

Senior Highlights
Year 7 History and Hiking
Year 7 have been learning about England in the late Anglo-Saxon age in preparation for their visit to Laxton next week to observe medieval farming systems and a ruined motte and bailey castle.
They have also been seen around the school grounds with clipboards, collecting sights, sounds, smells and impressions for an autumnal poem.
Meanwhile, the first intrepid navigation hikers of Years 7 and 8 set off on a circular route between Ompton and Eakring on Tuesday, learning to interpret Ordnance Survey maps and read the signs around them to orientate themselves….not easy when some of the footpath signs had been destroyed!
I also ran my annual Yikes Major Hikes for students over summer. Congrats to all those who completed!

Year 9 Chemistry/Year 10 Art
Year 9 have been separating substances for the start of their GCSE Chemistry course, while Year 10 artists used iPads to capture photographs around the school grounds.

First rugby match of the season for the year 5 and 6 against Burton Hathow school this week.
A very even and entertaining game in which both sides scored some lovely tries! A promising start.

Finn S (Y10) had a great season at Mansfield Rugby Club receiving the award for most improved player. We’re so proud of him.
Lauren (Y7), who runs for Mansfield Harriers, has been asked to represent Nottinghamshire in the intercounty athletics competition this Saturday at Nuneaton. Go Lauren!

Other news
We have started a new recycling program in school through Teracycle. Inspired over the summer by Charlotte (Y4) let’s hope we can make a real difference. Funds are also raised for schools through this program.
We also tried to sign up for the ASDA rewards program, but that seems to be for state schools only, sadly.
Well done to our students who received recent LAMDA awards. I am delighted to announce Mrs Walster is going to support our students over the coming weeks.
