Wellow Weekly 15th March 2024

PRE-SCHOOL

The pupils in Pre School visited White Post Farm as part of their learning of ‘Animals and their Homes’.

They were very excited to have a tour, feed the animals and handle some furry friends. We had so much fun – especially in the play barn at the end of the day! 

PRE-PREP

The Chocolate Kitchen provided Year Two with the opportunity to experience first hand the work of a chocolatier.

Just like Willy Wonka, they then got to design and manufacture their own individual, scrumptious lollipops!

This activity aligned perfectly with our ‘book hook’ for this term-Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

This activity was then followed up by a visit to Bassetlaw Museum where the children enjoyed finding out all about local History.

Finally, we made a visit to the Art Gallery within the museum, where we looked at the various pieces of Artwork on display before using our appraising skills developed in class to express our thoughts and opinions on each of the paintings.

What a busy morning we had with lots of interactive hands on learning!

Whilst learning why we have Red Nose Day, Year 1 made a friendship circle and discussed different ways in which we can be kind to others. 

In Y2 French, we learned some places in the town so that we could ask each other to go places and then reply with “yes please, I like that” and “no thank you, that’s boring”. We created some funny role plays with this language and ended with a betting game where the focus was on copying language carefully and remembering to include accents and apostrophes. So impressed!

PREP

On Friday, Prep classes welcomed Fran; a Civil Engineer from the Environment Agency to talk about Flood Defences – particularly apt to us at Wellow after recent floods in the area.

Students were tasked with designing flood defences to protect people and properties, using Lego and Play-Doh.

Year 6 explored Piaget’s Collection of Symbol Noses in Art on Friday – very fitting for Red Nose Day!

SENIOR

On Thursday, students in Year 7 visited Deepdale and Monsaldale as part of their Outdoor Pursuits trip with Mr. O’Kane.

Year 7 – With Mr Whittaker on Moon Phases using Oreos! Each Oreo was used to create a Moon phase throughout the month. (All Oreos were eaten after the task!).

Year 8 have been looking at the effect forces can have on their handmade parachutes – of course, extra points for creativity and egg survival!

Year 9 & 10 Drama- Theatre visit to “The Crucible” 

“The Crucible” by Arthur Miller is one of the most important and influential plays of the twentieth century. Based on the Salem Witch Trials, the play is Miller’s political comment on America in the 1950s and this production was a timely parable for contemporary society. It’s a meaty piece of work and a great GCSE Drama text! 

Drama students were treated to a directing workshop in which students were able to see the process of how the text was brought to life. Lola ‘trod the boards’ and took on a role in one of the scenes with huge confidence! The Q & A afterwards enabled our students to ask about the play and to get some interesting information on careers in the theatre.  

The production itself was a fantastic display of performance with an interesting use of Brechtian distancing techniques and sound and lighting effects. We also squeezed in a trip to the Art Gallery and a visit to the Winter Gardens. Thank you to Mrs Barber, Ms Orger, Ms Larkin and Michael for helping this day happen.
